Three steps to your first lesson

  1. 1

    Apply with your teaching certificate

Tell us your subjects and grades, and upload your provincial certificate. We check it against the provincial registry before you meet a student.

  2. 2

Set your rate and your hours

Choose what an hour of your teaching costs, and the times you are free.

  3. 3

Teach the families who book you

Parents find you by subject and grade, then book you directly. Genie handles the billing and the lesson record.

Questions teachers ask

How much of my rate do I keep?

All of it. You set your hourly rate and keep 100%. Genie charges parents a separate service fee.

When do I get paid?

Usually within 7 days of each completed lesson. Genie collects from the parent through its payment processor, so you never send an invoice or chase a payment.

Who can teach on Genie?

Teachers certified by a Canadian provincial body, such as the Ontario College of Teachers. You upload your certificate when you apply, and Genie checks it before you meet a student. Lessons cover grades 1 to 12.

Can I teach on Genie alongside my school job?

Yes. You choose your hours, so your lessons happen outside the school day. The Ontario College of Teachers allows private tutoring. Never tutor your own students for pay, and check your board’s policy first, because some boards also rule out students at your school.

Do parents get my phone number?

No. Messages, scheduling and lessons all happen inside Genie. Your phone number and personal email stay private.

Are lessons recorded?

Yes. Genie records each lesson so the Smart Lesson Binder can write the summary. Recordings are kept for 90 days, and only you and your student can watch them. Genie may also use them to give you feedback.

Do I need to download anything?

No. Genie runs in your browser, with video and a shared whiteboard built in.

Can I teach a Genie family outside the platform?

Not for six months after your last lesson with them on Genie. That rule keeps families booking through Genie, which is how Genie keeps sending them to you.

How is Genie different from other tutoring sites?

Most tutoring sites accept anyone and take a share of the tutor’s rate. Genie accepts only certified teachers, and it takes nothing from your rate. Parents pay Genie’s service fee separately.
